Eschatology 101
...a study of the "last days." With all of the unfortunate
subjects
dividing today's church, "end times" doctrine is right at the
top of the list. Having studied this
(end times) since the late '80's,
I've come to believe that many, but not all, end
time prophecies have been fulfilled, especially Matthew 23, 24
and Luke 21. This is called
"partial Preterism"
(I really don't care for
this term.)
The key to this belief is that Jesus was
speaking of the "end of the Age (gk. aion)" and not the
"end of the World (gk. kosmos)" And. . . . that all of those
things spoken were to indeed come upon "that generation" and not a future
(generation) race of Jews in the future. And . . . . . that the
old Covenant (the law and the prophets) has been
fulfulled.
Those thinking that all
prophecy was fulfilled (in AD 70) are
called "full Preterist." Those thinking the Kingdom of
God was "postponed" because the Jews rejected their
Messiah, and that a future Jewish Kingdom will be restored,
complete with a new temple are called Dispensationalist.
The foundation of Dispensationalism is belief in a "secret
rapture".
The doctrine of a
secret rapture was first conceived by
John Nelson Darby of the Plymouth Brethren in 1827. Darby,
is known as the father of dispensationalism, although some
scholars attribute the original idea to a vision by a young girl in England
call
Margaret Macdonald. But that's another topic.
The belief
of a secret rapture was made popular in America at the turn of
the 20th century by
C.I. Scofield, and
continues to this day.
With this doctrine being accepted by major seminaries, including
the famed Dallas Theological (Southern Baptist)
seminary, the secret rapture doctrine was up and running. The
Scofield Reference bible was one of the biggest sellers in the first half
of the 20th century. It's popularity has become the basis for
everything from Hal Lindsey's "Late Great
Planet Earth" to the "Left Behind" books
and movies.
Preterism in any form is considered
heresy by today's dispensational churches, which is what I
myself believed before studying scripture for myself.
Full Preterist have no use for Partial Preterist like myself, and Scofield
/ Darby
Dispensationalist have no use for either. That's why I'm offering some
exhortations ( column
on left) and scripture for others to study for themselves.
"Have I therefore become your
enemy because I tell you the truth?"
